Since adopted at the Earth Summit in 1992, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has been working hard to address biodiversity loss crisis through biodiversity conservation, sustainable use of its components, and fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources. The second part of COP15 will take place in December 2022. It is expected to adopt a new framework with a set of new targets aiming at halting and reversing biodiversity loss and achieving the vision of living in harmony with nature. This briefing paper provides an overview of Convention on Biological Diversity, focusing on the history, the operation and decision-making mechanism, multiple strategy plans and their implementation, two protocols under Convention on Biological Diversity, and the implementation progress in China, with the aim to help participants catch up on the progress of global biodiversity governance. We look to Chinese social organisations to contribute their wisdom in negotiating and facilitating the adoption of an ambitious and practical framework.
