The conservation of global ocean is of growing international concern. The negotiation for a new treaty on biodiversity in the high-seas has entered its final stage. The UN climate change process has included the ocean in its agenda. And the biodiversity conservation targets for the next decade is to be set by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Conservation is urgently required for the stressed marine ecosystems. The 15th Conference of the Parties to the CBD (COP 15) is of great significance. It will determine the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and put forward the strategies and measures needed to achieve the goals. It will also forge actions to protect the world's oceans over the next decade. It could encourage the progress in other marine conservation processes which could jointly turn the tide of marine marine biodiversity loss.

As a founding member of Civil Society Alliance for Biodiversity, Greenovation Hub has been working on ocean governance since 2012. We believe that thorough understanding and inclusive discussion could help build insights, trust and consensus and thus create more opportunities for marine conservation. As COP15 approaches, we have produced briefings summarizing information related to the CBD process and marine conservation and suggestions for the access of the COP. We hope these briefings could assist individuals and organizations interested in marine conservation or participating in the CBD-COP15.

The statements by national leaders at the UN Biodiversity Summit are an important “stocktaking of political will” in the lead-up to next year’s 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The theme of World Oceans Day 2020 is “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean”. As a civil society concerned with marine conservation, we call on the entire society to pay attention to the protection of marine biodiversity and support multi-level marine innovations from institutions to management and technology.
